Correction to Murk Avenue: Ice Cube's 'Good Day'... →
It’s a compelling argument. I can’t believe that Cube managed to have a good day without being able to debate the merits of his calculations on the internet.
lahatiel:
It should actually be November 30th, 1988. I think I found some errors in Donovan Strain’s calculations about when Ice Cube’s “Good Day” occurred, and explain my own findings below.
I feel somewhat silly making this...

It didn't sound pathetic until I said it out loud
Friend: What have you been doing today?
Me: I've been reading Sherlock Holmes, and it has all these references to historical events I've never heard of, like the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and the Andaman Islands, so I've been researching them...
Her: Blank stare, smile, nod, back away.
Me: Oh, right...um, I should probably look at job postings (I then realized, and did not mention, I was wearing sweatpants over pajamas from when I moved the car for street cleaning. Mon Dieu.)
Did Americans in 1776 have British accents?
nickpatrick:
Reading David McCullough’s 1776, I found myself wondering: Did Americans in 1776 have British accents? If so, when did American accents diverge from British accents?
The answer surprised me.

Priorities!
My day so far:
Wake up a little after 6am
Oooh! RezScore responded to my troll-y Tweet…must craft clever 140 character response why I think they’re science-y, not scientific.
Cook up some steel cut oats. Forgot to buy milk…Yum, vanilla yogurt works well.
On further reflection, RezScore is much better at PR than science, but who am I to judge? Continue to over-think it...

Can I register a small, non-judgey grammar objection to this term? Despite its relatively recent coinage and re-minting into even more recent currency, it’s a bad construction. A literal definition of its Latin roots would be “making the different normal,” but its intended definition is about…
remembering our Latin…

The Dirty Talk Of The Town: Profanity At “The New Yorker” via The Awl
A dirty little secret of The New Yorker archives…a compendium of New Yorker firsts in vulgarity.
I can’t believe I never thought to do this. Well played, The Awl.
The Solzhenitsyn quote is horrifying, but is the correct/scientific use of the word ‘anal.’ He’s describing torture....
