The Dirty Talk Of The Town: Profanity At "The New Yorker"
The Dirty Talk Of The Town: Profanity At “The New Yorker” via The Awl
A dirty little secret of The New Yorker archives…a compendium of New Yorker firsts in vulgarity.
- I can’t believe I never thought to do this. Well played, The Awl.
- The Solzhenitsyn quote is horrifying, but is the correct/scientific use of the word ‘anal.’ He’s describing torture. Solzhenitsyn and stories about Guantanamo/Abu Ghraib/Farrah Fawcett *should* use anatomically correct descriptions. I demand a recount to determine appearance of colloquial use of the word anal and use of swear words outside of fiction.
- The first Marquez passage also uses the n-word and ‘whore,’ which aren’t even on the list. Being derogatory to women & people of color isn’t profane? Oh, right.
